Update from Father Sadoni
January 18, 2010 - Conditions after the Earthquake
Dear Friends in USA,
I write this e-mail to you to let you know that I am alive and all my parents and my fiancee's parents are alive.
The first bulding of St Vincent is down and 6 kids and employees died in the earthquake. Now they are with me in the field of College St Pierre near the Palace. This afternoom I will have a meeting with the bishop and I plan to propose to him to let me go with all the kid to Montrouis. I hope he agrees.
We really appreciate what Bill Squire did yesterday. He came to visit us in this difficult situation. He brought some money for us and we will use this money to feed the kids during three weeks in Montrouis.
The urgent now is to feed them. We don't have any materiels (cloths, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap). After the earthquake people got into St Vincent, so they robbed all the rest of the materials left, in my office, in the dorm, in the pharmacy, in the oparating room etc....
I hope in the next day the state will be able to pull out all the wall so we can built a new wall to protect the rest of St Vincent.
Glory to God we are safe, Glory to God He keeps the children safe. May his name be glorified everywhere.
In Christ,
Sadoni
Note: The email message above was received on January 18, 2004 from Father Sadoni, Director of St. Vincent's Center. Montrouis, where he hopes to take the children, is on the coast northwest of Port-au-Prince. The Rev. Canon Bill Squire, President of the Children's Medical Mission of Haiti, went to Haiti to assess the situation and take money to feed the children - he will return home soon. Also check the CMMH website for updates. Please continue to keep Father Sadoni, the children and staff at St. Vincent's in your prayers.
Received January 15, 3010:
We have received word that Pere Sadoni and the children and the staff at St. Vincent's are alive but shaken! Miraculously, St. Vincent's structures are reported to be intact with some damage, even though buildings nearby collapsed (including the Roman Catholic and Episcopal Cathedrals. The entire Cathedral complex including Holy Trinity School and the Convent were destroyed.) Note: Communication is difficult. We heard, via an unconfirmed email, that there may been injuries and possibly some fatalities at the Center and the structure is not as sound as originally reported. We are waiting confirmation of this information. Please keep all at St. Vincent's in your prayers.
CMMH (Childrens Medical Mission of Haiti) President Bill Squire is scheduled to fly to the Dominican Republic on January 15. He is flying into Santo Domingo and traveling with a group on January 16 to Haiti. This trip was organized by the Bishop of the Dominican Republic. The Rev. Squire will drive over the mountains to Port-au-Prince, and work with Fr Leon Sadoni to make sure St. Vincent's has necessary food, water, and hygiene supplies. If he can get through, he will probably go to College St. Pierre soccer field where we understand a number of people are sheltering, including the nuns from the Convent and Bishop Duracin. Updates will be posted when available.
